Retro Clock: George Nelson's Ball Clock

George Nelson was one of the leading designers of the 1940s and 1950s. While working with the Howard Miller Company, he designed (or assisted with the design) of many iconic clocks, many of which are now considered to be prime examples of retro clocks. Probably his most famous clock is the Ball Clock. This clock symbolizes both the Atomic Age and space and embraces the clean geometric themes of the midcentury modern or American Modernism period.
The Vitra Ball Clock
is a replica that was built using the original specifications from George Nelson’s archives and is constructed of beech wood, metal and acrylic lacquer. The replica clock is available in white, natural, red, orange or multicolored styles. The original clocks either plugged into a wall socket, or were wired into the wall, but these replicas use a battery powered mechanism to make it easier (and neater!) to place the clock.
The Vitra authentic replica is a high quality clock and runs several hundreds of dollars. Fortunately, for those on a budget who want this classic retro clock on their wall, there are a number of clocks available that are “inspired” by the ball clock. Some of these are very similar and some have added interesting variations. All of these are significantly less expensive than the “official” replica.
