Retro Clock: George Nelson's Sunflower Clock
Many of the classic retro clocks were designed by George Nelson, a designer who was one of the primary influences of the American Modernism or Midcentury Modern period. During his lifetime he designed, or assisted with the design, of nearly 300 different clocks. Most of these were produced by the Howard Miller Company.
Vitra manufactures the most authentic Sunflower Clock replica available. This clock was produced using the original specifications obtained from the George Nelson archives and is considered by many to be of the highest quality. The one major difference is that this clock is battery powered while it was necessary to plug the original into the wall. Like the original model, the replica Sunflower Clock is a large clock, measuring nearly 30” in diameter and comes with a birch / black finish.
Like the other Vitra George Nelson clock reproductions, this model is not cheap – it can run over a thousand dollars. But similar clocks in the same style can be found at much lower cost.
